WorldEdit, WorldGuard, and CraftBook

If you run Minecraft servers, you may be aware that hMod is being displaced by Bukkit. hMod had some longstanding design problems that afflicted it such as the inflexibility of event handling and the inability to communicate between plugins. The project leader also disappeared for weeks at a time and so a lot of ideas had to be pushed aside in lieu of his presence. Bukkit is the replacement and it aims to solve a number of the issues, but plugins naturally will have to be ported over. With that in mind, the plans for WorldEdit, WorldGuard, and CraftBook are as follows:

  • WorldEdit is already being dual-released for both hMod and Bukkit and you can use the latest releases for both. However, since Bukkit is currently a work in progress, not all functions of WorldEdit work yet.
  • WorldGuard has not been ported and will not be until Bukkit attains permissions and configuration API. However, WorldGuard is fairly simple and much of it is abstracted, so porting should be done in maybe thirty minutes. WorldGuard may be dual released for both platforms pending some issues.
  • Another CraftBook developer (Lymia) is currently working on re-organizing CraftBook’s code to make it platform-agnostic, allowing CraftBook to be dual-released if we want. It may only be released for Bukkit, however.

Support will continue for hMod releases until Bukkit is ready. The next Minecraft update is slated for this Thursday and if Bukkit is not ready by then (which it looks to be the case at this point), hMod will be updated. In the event that Mojang Specifications debuts with an API, we will likely port the three to it. Most of the three addons were written or will be converted in order for them to be compatible with several platforms at once.

Thanks for your work on these plugins. They are some of the most useful out there.

Do you know if there is any work being done on a new hMod-compatible server mod?
